Dual Chamber Master Cylinder to a stock '39-48 Ford Pedal Assembly

By Jerry Slattery

The stock Ford under-floor pedal assembly may mow have some additional value with the advent of this adapter kit, especially for those attempting to use the stock '39-48 master cylinder. The same three-bolt, single-chamber master cylinder and pushrod was used by Ford from '39-48 on their under-floor pedal assemblies. C.H. Topping and company, in Long Beach, Cam now has two kits available that will allow you to replace the stock three-bolt, single-chamber master with a two-bolt, dual-chamber master cylinder.

Why two kits? Owner Vince Bunting gets a lot of calls from builders on a limited budget. Knowing this, he's made one kit that includes all the items you'll need to just bolt it together using basic hand tools (no $25-$80 double flaring tool or tube bender needed for this kit).. If you have all the tools, experience, and extra time, then the Stage II kit is for you. It includes a length of brake line and all the tube nuts, adapters, and more to plumb the system. Both kits come with the master cylinder and adapter plate with bolts and, depending on your brake situation (i.e., drum/drum or drum/disc), residual check valves and proportioning valves are available. Remember, this is a full-service performance brake shop that will have everything you need on the shelf, so be sure to discuss your brake system with Vince to get the correct line nuts, adapter fittings, check valves, and brake light switch with T-adapter included with the kit. Custom kits can be assembled for your special needs.

STAGE I
This is the kit that needs no double- flaring tools. Any of the short lines that need bending can be done over a can of WD-40. The Stage I kit contains a dual-chamber master cylinder (different bore diameters are available for your situation); steel adapter plate and attaching flathead, countersunk bolts. stop-light switch and in-line "T"; two 12 inch lengths of 5/16-inch flared brake line with fittings and attaching adapters: and a residual check valve (per application). Proportioning valves are also available, but not part of the kit. Questions are encouraged!

Stage II
This stage II kit I is for builders with double-flaring tools and tube benders. Like the first kit, it contains the master cylinder, steel adapter plate and bolts, stop-light switch, and in-line "T." But, here's where the second kit differ. It contains one length of 3/16 inch brake line 84 inches long, flared with nuts (longer or shorter lengths are available), and five line nuts: one 3/8-24, one 9/16-24, one 1/2-20, one 9/16-18, and 0ne 9/16-20. This should cover any adapting situation you may encounter at either port on the master cylinder, or on the 3/16 brake line. Additional parts necessary to plumb the complete car are also available.
